Jay “Pee Wee” Gleason Wins at Daytona (1973)

Came across this wonderful Daytona Victory Lane photo from 1973. It was the 250cc Amateur Road Race and Jay “Pee Wee” Gleason (center) won the race over runner up Randy Cleek (left) and Bill Weigle (right) who took third. It looks like Jay was on one of the famous Yamaha Noguchi Specials. Jay went on to be the go-to guy when the manufacturers wanted to get the best quarter-mile times out of their production bikes. Cleek went on to become AMA National Road Racing Champion in 1976. Tragically Cleek died in an auto accident in Italy in April of 1977. I don’t know much about Bill other than he was from the Canal Zone. I wonder if he was friends will Ted Henter, another Canal Zone resident? It was great to come across this image these guys when they were so young and really just getting started in racing. 📷Gary Van Voorhis  #peeweegleason #jaygleason #randycleek #billweigle #noguchi #yamaha #daytonainternationalspeedway #noviceclass
