FMF Honda Teammates Battle at Budds Creek (1998)

How many times have you heard the first priority in racing is to beat your teammate? That is the mantra, especially at the top level where the intra-squad battles can make a huge difference on who ends up getting that lucrative ride the next year. Here’s a great example of teammates battling for position at the Budds Creek National in May of 1998. FMF Honda teammates Brock Sellards and Jason McCormick are nose to tail going into a turn. Sellards was just in his second full season of pro racing and on this day, he got the best of his more experienced teammate. Sellards went 19-8 for 12th overall, while McCormick had a tough outing, finishing 32nd overall with a 26-33. McCormick had a wildly uneven season with finishes like this, followed by incredibly strong races like a fifth at Red Bud and a podium (3rd) at Washougal. While Sellards didn’t have the standout rides his teammate did, he was more consistent during the year and finished strong with three top-10 finishes. Sellards was ranked 12th at the end of the series, McCormick 15th, and maybe that made all the difference. Sellards came back with FMF Honda in ’99, while McCormick ended up with Planet Honda.
