Carl Smith on his Suzuki Superbike at Daytona (1979)

Carl Smith, who was from Miami at the time, running his Suzuki GS1000 Superbike at Daytona. Carl only ran AMA Superbike a couple of years and on a limited east coast schedule, but he had some strong results. A top-10 (10th) in the 1979 Daytona Superbike race – that’s solid, especially as a privateer. Then he scored a 12th at Loudon that year. But the race that really caught my eye was his fifth-place result in the Road Atlanta AMA Superbike race in 1980! That’s a seriously good result. I think this photo is from practice maybe, or the Bike Week amateur races leading up to the pro races at Daytona or perhaps the fall races, probably in ’79.
