Scott Walter (No. 251) races his Kawasaki GPz550 at the WERA Grand National Final at Road Atlanta in 1985. Chasing Walters in what is likely a practice session is Steve Sighter (No. 241), an unidentified rider and Jeff Dean (No. 246).
Walter said he was lucky to work in the Kawasaki/Honda shop in his home town of Wabash, Indiana, during high school and college. Friends he made there took him to Daytona in 1984 to watch the races and Scott was hooked. Not long after he went to Grattan to run his first race.
“I raced a full season in 1985 and earned enough points to go to the GNF,” Scott recalled. “After that I raced off and on until 1989, when I stopped racing to start a family. My favorite tracks were Grattan and Nelson Ledges.”
Today Scott works at Polaris and has passed the racing bug on to his two sons who’ve been doing amateur and Pro dirt track in Wisconsin and Illinois for the last 15 years.
“I still meet up with my old bike shop buddies every year for the Indy MotoGP,” Scott concluded.
