Daytona 200 Start (1980)

• Larry Lawrence
What an incredible shot of the start of the 1980 Daytona 200! It’s from a unique angle that you rarely saw and captures just how close the people on the pit wall were to the often-chaotic action of the start of the classic race. Check out Rich Schlachter (48 ) on the rear wheel of his powerful Yamaha TZ750. From (l to r) you can see Kevin Stafford (175), Bruce Hammer (52), defending race winner Dale Singleton (30), Mark Jones (39), Wes Cooley (34), Schlachter, Marc Fontan (399), race winner Patrick Pons (303), Boet Van Dulmen (327), Jimmy Adamo (6) and Kenny Roberts (2). Great capture of a great event. (Tom Mueller photo)
