Supercross Champ Mike “Too Tall” Bell at the Silverdome (1981)

Mike “Too Tall” Bell on the gas aboard his factory Yamaha at the Pontiac Supercross in 1981. Mike got on the podium both nights at the Silverdome that year. One thing that I immediately noticed in this photo is how close the fans are to trackside. These days the first 10 or 15 rows or so are covered in tarp so no one can sit that close. I wonder if there was any particular incident that caused Supercross promoters to move the fans back from the edge of the track? If anyone knows please leave a comment. (Rich Chenet photo)
