Ron Lechien racing a what was said to be a nearly stock Yamaha YZ250 to victory in the CMC/Miller High Life Supercross Trans-Cal Series Finale in November of 1983. The story goes that Yamaha was not happy Lechien signed with Honda for ’84, so they did not supply him a bike for the one-off Supercross event in Jack Murphy Stadium. So Ron went to Lucky Yamaha in San Diego the week of the race and bought a Yamaha YZ250 off the showroom floor. Then Ron’s dad Dick and Bevo Forte did some last-minute modifications to the bike and Lechien went out and scored the victory over factory riders Rick Johnson and David Bailey. I’m not sure how much of the story is real or simply legend. Incidentally, I would guess this event, with 36,000 spectators, was the biggest crowd to ever watch a CMC event.
