Gary Goodfellow Leads Daytona 200 (1989)

Gary Goodfellow (No. 11) leads the pack into the first turn at the start of the 1989 Daytona 200. Goodfellow led early, but his race ended on lap six when he crashed on oil and broke his arm, foot and ribs. That’s Rich Arnaiz right behind Goodfellow’s Suzuki. Also visible in the shot are Tommy Douglas (No. 58), Martin Wimmer (No. 19), Doug Polen (No. 23), Ricky Orlando (No. 12), Rueben McMurter (No. 24) and Kevin Rentzell (No. 43). The ’89 race was known for attrition. Nearly all the top teams and riders dropped out with crashes of mechanicals, and it was privateer John Ashmead who won on a three-year-old, battled-tested Honda VFR750. (Courtesy DIS)
