Rider Training in Long Beach (1979)

You were fortunate if you got your rider training in Long Beach, California in the 1970s. A group of former and current LBPD motor officers taught the classes, so you know they knew their stuff. This photo from 1979 shows student Russel O’Quinn (holding helmet) picking up advice from co-instructor Carl Mauger, who was one of the LBPD motor officers. The training course was sponsored by Long Beach City College in conjunction with the Long Beach Safety Council and Police Department. Sanctioned by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the program received the National Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s “Best Motorcycle Safety Course” award for two years. (Pat Phillips photo)
