I came across this photo of Jeremy McGrath sporting the No. 1 plate during an outdoor event at Glen Helen. I knew it couldn’t be an AMA National and spurred on by a discussion with David Pingree, I discovered this photo was from something called the Chaparral U.S. AMA Pro 125/250 Shootout Championship. It was a pre-season race held at Glen Helen late December of 1998. It was a unique racing format where the 125 and 250 riders raced together. The 125 and 250 riders had separate heat races and then for the Shootout final the 125 riders gated first and blasted off, then the 250 riders gated, took off and gave chase to the 125 riders. In the end 125 rider Shae Bentley used his head start to great advantage and won the race over McGrath and Jeff Emig. (Mitch Friedman photo)
