Match Race Captains Fred Merkel and Rob McElnea Celebrate at Donington Park (1986)

Team Captains Fred Merkel and Rob McElnea in celebration at the conclusion of the 1986 Transatlantic Trophy Match Races. Merkel has just won the final round of the eight-race event, but McElnea was happy because the UK had defeated the Americans by a safe margin. The ’86 Match Race was the first time Superbikes became the standard race machine. Prior to that GP machine could be used. Americans Kevin Schwantz and Merkel dominated the proceedings winning 6 out of the eight races at Donington Park – McElnea and Roger Burnett won the other two. Schwantz was the top scorer of the event. (Joe Workman Collection) #fredmerkel #robmcelnea #flyinfred #matchraces #transatlanticchallenge #doningtonpark
