How many of you remember the Kawasaki Kup? This was a big indoor race held inside Detroit’s Cobo Arena in the 1970s. From the shots of the 1974 event, it looks like it was a well-attended race. The house looks packed. The ’74 event was held in January, I believe in conjunction with a big bike show there. The Kawasaki Kup had a bit of everything – besides indoor short track, there were junior races, a stunt jumper and even a motorcycle police obstacle course pitting different department riders against one another. It was a happening! Cycle News’ Gary Van Voorhis came up from Atlanta to cover the event in ’74 and here’s a set of photos from his coverage. There is some fun stuff here and some big-name riders.
