Check out this amazing photo of the 1969 Sacramento Mile! The race saw a record crowd of 30,000 spectators show up for the national. That’s Triumph Rider Gene Romero #20 leading the pack into the first turn for a qualifying heat race. Coming up close behind are Larry Palmgren #5, Sonny Burres #69, Art Barda #96, Tom Rockwood #20X and others. Chuck Palmgren, who won the other Heat race, scored the national victory that day. Incidentally, this photo was from the old State Fairgrounds in Sacramento, not Cal Expo, home with the current Sacramento Mile. (Cycle News Collection)
