Dan Chivington’s Road America Victory (1980)

Dan Chivington (center) celebrates on the podium after winning the AMA Lightweight Expert (aka 250 Grand Prix) National at Road America in June of 1980. On the podium with Chivington are runner up Rusty Sharp (right) and third-place finisher Gill Martin (left). All three were riding Yamahas. Eddie Lawson was in the race on his factory Kawasaki, but on this day even Lawson wasn’t able to match the pace Chivington was setting. Lawson was about 10 bike lengths back in second, when, with four laps to go, the engine went sour on his Kawasaki, and he retired from the race. It marked the first and ultimately Chivington’s only AMA National win as an expert. He credited his brother Dean for building him a strong and reliable machine.
