Thad Wolff on the Wheelsmith Maico at The Superbikers (1982)

Thad Wolff ripping around Carlsbad Raceway on his Wheelsmith Maico during the 1982 ABC Wide World of Sports Superbikers race. The made-for-TV event brought together riders from nearly all forms of motorcycle racing to do battle on a track that was part road race, part flat track and part motocross. ABC Wide World of Sports had massive viewership and some of the manufacturers put serious effort into building bikes for the race. Thad’s machine was a pretty typical standard for the Superbikers, a big-bore two-stroke fitted with flat track wheels and tires. Thad did quite well in ’82, finishing eighth, just behind two-time Motocross World Champ Andre Malherbe and just in front of leading off-road racer Mike Baker. 📷Dale Brown
