The Failed Parker Pick-Up

We all know that Valentino Rossi began the trendy road racing braking body English known as the “Doctor Dangle”, whereby a rider dangles his leg low and off to the side off the bike as he brakes for a turn.

Lesser known was Scotty Parker’s attempt in the mid-‘90s to create a cornering style in flat track he liked to call the ‘Parker Pick-Up’. Inspired by his cross-training doing cheerleading moves, his training coach taught Scotty the toe-touch move and Parker thought it was perfect to use in flat track.

Parker attempted to popularize this unique cornering maneuver, but it never caught on, as you can see in this shot fellow racer Mike Hale wanted no part of attempting the champ’s new tricky move.

Perhaps bored by all the winning he was doing, Scott Parker attempt to interject a new cornering style into dirt track racing in the mid-‘90s, but the ‘Parker Pick-Up”, as he liked to call it, fell flat. (Mitch Friedman photo)
