Ed Key races a Kawasaki EX500 though the carousel at Indianapolis Raceway Park during a WERA sprint race in October of 1987. Kawasaki was paying decent contingency money in WERA D Production, which led a number of top club racers to compete in the class that year. In this race Key finished second to fellow Wisconsin racer Andy Fenwick. Stevie Patterson was third on a Yamaha RZ350. This photo is part of the excellent Greg Sickmeier Collection.

Until I saw the picture I would have sworn on a stack of bibles that I had never even rode an EX500 let alone raced one. I must be getting old as I have no recollection of that bike. I wonder who owned it?

Ed,
It might have been someone’s endurance bike that they had you ride to make (split) a few contingency bucks.

Ed was fast, smooth and consistent no matter what track, the conditions, what bike he was on or who he was racing against. And he won a LOT of races. He and his wife, Barb, were/are good people too. Only the best could race with Ed.
