Rentzell and FZR400 Drives Big Bikes Nuts at Little Talladega

Kevin Rentzell (No. 9), on the Raw Racing Yamaha FZR400, drives riders on big-bore bikes nuts at Little Talladega in a WERA National Endurance race in March of 1990. That’s Mike Smith (No. 1) on the Team Suzuki Endurance Suzuki GSXR1100 and Paul Bray (No. 2) on the Human Race Team Yamaha FZR1000. I think the other rider in the photo is David Mims on a Kawasaki EX500. Team Suzuki went on to win the race over the Human Race team. RAW racing blew a motor halfway through the six-hour event.

Talladega Gran Prix Raceway is such a tight and technical little road race track that riders on nimble handling small bikes could often drive riders on bigger bikes nuts, as was the case here with Kevin Rentzell (No. 9), on the Raw Racing Yamaha FZR400, duking it out with Mike Smith (No. 1) on the Team Suzuki Endurance Suzuki GSXR1100 and Paul Bray (No. 2) on the Human Race Team Yamaha FZR1000. I think the other rider in the photo is David Mims on a Kawasaki EX500. (Larry Lawrence photo)

  2. Larry, you must keep great records….or….your memory is unbelievable. I was Revin’s partner for this race, and the motor did let go around the 4 hour mark, when we had a 2 lap lead in our class, and I believe we were running in the top 5 overall. I forgot all about it till I saw your post. Great work Larry. Kirk Reuille
