Pummell Winning the 1988 Michigan Gran Prix

WERA held a special series at Grattan Raceway in the late 1980s called the Michigan Gran Prix. In 1988 the series came down to a battle between Fritz Kling and Phil Pummell at the series finale. Kling only needed to score in the top 10 to secure the title, but as this photo shows he and Pummell went at it most of the race, battling at every corner for the lead. In this shot Pummell is leading Kling over the jump. Unfortunately for Kling his Yamaha threw a chain late in the race. That allowed Pummell to not only score the race win, but clinch the championship as well. Sadly and ironically we lost both Pummell and Kling to brain cancer.
