Over the Apex and through the Woods

Back in the mid-1980s Grattan Raceway was a pretty rustic place. In places the forest came right up to the edge of the track. I shot this in the back section, tucked back among the trees and using branches and leaves to frame this photo that shows Brian Berney (No. 640) leading a pack on his buddy Callum Gray’s Yamaha LC350, during what was probably a regional endurance race.

Callum Gray (No. 640), on his Yamaha LC350, leads a pack of riders in a WERA sprint race in May of 1985. This photo was shot among the trees that lined the outside of the track during the mid-1980s. You definitely didn’t want to run off the track in this section. Great for photography, not so much for the riders. (Larry Lawrence photo)
