BSA vs. Harley-Davidson 20 Years Later

The clock was rolled back 20 years at the 1990 WERA Grand National Final at Road Atlanta. This is Vintage racing action with Pat Conroy (No. 77) with the inside line on his Harley-Davidson XR750 with Dave Roper (No. 71v) on a 500cc BSA challenging Conroy on the outside. Coming up behind Conroy and Roper are Ted Hubbard, on another BSA and Ron Barton (No. 85) on a Ducati 750.

  1. Loved watching Roper kick butt in a race at Blackhawk Farms many years ago. Funny thing was, he was on a vintage bike handing it to a full field of new bikes.

  2. That BSA was a B-50 that belonged to the inimitable Dick Miles and which Dr. John had layed hands on at one time. It had K-81’s on it that Jim Allen told me were at least 20 years old.

  3. Hey Larry, got any idea who the 227 is? Looks kind of like a guy I used to run against in V5, on a KZ1000 of some sort. Can’t remember his name, but he was a tall blond guy.

  4. Kevin, I don’t know who he is. I looked at some other frames and it appears the name on the front of his leathers says “Dan”. I don’t find a rider with the first name Dan in the results though.

  5. Aw heck, that’s him, but I can’t remember his last name. Rich Graver, Tom De’attore, and Dan the KZ man, always had some good battles in V5. Guess I’m going to have to go digging now.

BTW, speaking of scanning pics, I had scanned a bunch from ’83 and ’84 that I was going to send you, and then realized I left smudge prints on the glass, which often lined up with the number plate on the bike in the pic! Arrrgh! Going to have to redo them all, but I think you’ll like them, as most were from IRP.
