John Madry races his Yamaha FZ750 through “The Bowl” turn at Grattan Raceway during a WERA Sprint race in August of 1987. Madry was a solid club racer out of Indianapolis. The Bowl at Grattan was a tight banked corner. It sat in a depression and all around the hillside surrounding the corner was the back of the infield pit area, so it was always the most popular spectator corner at the track. Hundreds of friends and family of the racers would spread out blankets or set up lawn chairs in the amphitheater setting and watch riders do battle down below through the Bowl. Riders who had their bike dialed, as it appears Madry does in this shot, could fly around the banked turn in spite of its tight radius. This photo is from the Greg Sickmeier Collection.
