This is the first lap of the WERA A Superbike Novice finale at the Grand National Final in November of 1989. You can’t make out the first rider past the frame, but behind him are Jeff Taylor (No. 689), Charles Rosaly (793), Tripp Nobles (No. 114), W.C. Earnhardt (No. 617), Kelly Drew (No. 21), Anthony Arden (No. 189), Steve Craft (No. 131), Scott Turner (No. 543) and Joseph Ballard (No. 415). After a few laps Nobles broke through traffic and then passed Steve Broadstreet to take the national title. Kelly Drew finished third, behind Broadstreet.

That’s me on #543. Since no one is leaning, I’m pretty sure that was a wet race. I don’t do rain.

Yup, It was raining. Started wet and progressed into the 3rd lap where I was leading until my intermediates started to slide on every exit.

Sorry Scott. They had you listed as Eric in the results. Yeah, it looks like a damp to drying track. Plus it’s the first lap and everyone is trying to get sorted out.You should have tucked in behind old No. 114 there and went for a ride!

No problem, Eric is also my name. I won the Road Atlanta A Superbike race in June, ’89 (on my production spec bike) but only because Nobles didn’t race that class that day. He was really fast.

I led that race on my 89 FZR 600 for the 1st 3 laps. I would trade the 1 st 3 laps for the last 3 laps. The rain was too much for the intermediate tires that I had on.
