The Tom Selleck of Superbike Racing

One of the funnier back stories in the history of AMA Superbike racing was the 1985 feature done by the Sun tabloid newspaper on Hoosier Superbike racer Terry Hampton. Hampton said the reporter talked to him by phone for about five minutes and he had no idea what direction the story would take. Well leave it to the Sun to go completely over the top by comparing Hampton’s “dark good looks” to TV star Tom Selleck and quoting a “Superbike groupie” who said her heart raced every time Terry took to the track. Makes you wonder what the Sun’s take would be on current Superbike champ Josh Hayes. I can see the headline now – “Melissa Furious Over Josh’s New Umbrella Girl”.

  1. This is too funny! I was the “pit crew, team manager, creative talent” behind Terry’s 1985 AMA Superbike campaign, the two of us putting in countless hours of travel all over the country that year. I remember this article coming out and the both of us laughing ourselves silly over this. Wow, this brings back some memories! The stories I could tell…
