This photo is from an ad for a regional race in San Jose, California. What I love about it is the fact that three different British makers are represented in the shot. Leading the way is Chuck Joyner (87Q) on a Triumph, followed by Jody Nicholas (23) on a Norton and Lloyd Houchins (29) on a BSA. This was probably from 1970 or ’71 and the British makers were still going strong and supporting dozens of pro racers in America. It seemed like the British brands especially took hold in West Coast flat track racing, as opposed to the Midwest where Harley remained king of the dirt. Also visible in this photo are Frank Gillespie (22) and Keith Mashburn (19).

Early ‘70s flat track action with all three leaders on British-made bikes. Chuck Joyner (87Q) is leading the way on a Triumph, followed by Jody Nicholas (23) on a Norton and Lloyd Houchins (29) on a BSA.
