Brothers Richard and Roger Slater became the Laverda importer for the UK in the early 1970s and input from the brothers led to many wonderful sporting models from the Italian maker. This bike is one of the Laverdas beautifully re-touched by the Slater Brothers. It was called the Slater Brothers Formula Jota 120, introduced in 1982. It retained the 1000cc triple engine, frame and suspension of the standard Jota 120, but in Slater Brothers tradition it was loaded with specialty parts. There was a three-into-one exhaust system, with reworked carburetion to match, and draped over the framework was a one-piece tank/ seat/tail section and matching fairing. The Formula Jota 120 used the latest Brembo brakes complete with triple drilled discs. The wheels on this special-order machine were gold-tinted Astralites, specially made for this project. I’ve heard only seven of these prototypes were ultimately made. To me it was easily one of the most striking sportbikes of its era.

The stunning Slater Brothers Formula Jota 120 prototype from 1982. Only seven were built.
My uncle has one of these in his shed in New Zealand, which he purchased from Rodney Timpson, the husband of penelope Keith in Burnley, England 1992. He toured Europe on it before having it sent home to NZ. One day the front of the frame snapped at the fork mount, and it has sat ever since. Otherwise it is in great condition, as he treated it like his baby. Due to an accident he can no longer ride, but I would love to restore this bike to its former glory, I always loved the sound it made as a kid. If anyone has any interest in this bike I would love to hear from you

Hi David,
I’m currently having the bike bought to me in Australia, to have a restoration done. What parts do you have? Are you willing to part with any?
The bike has a distinguishing feature, it has a Viking/warrior air brushed onto the tank area.
Thanks
Tim
