Often the best battles in a race are down field among mid-pack riders. Such was the case at the Loudon Classic Superbike race in 1986. The tightest pack mid-race was this group headed by Floridian Rick Shaw on his No. 95 South Dade Yamaha-sponsored Yamaha FZ750 leading Yamaha factory rider Jimmy Filice (17) and the Suzuki GSXR750 trio of Doug Dean (412), Jeff Atwell (231) and Eric Ritter (133). By the finish Filice had pulled away from this group to finish 15th. Next came Shaw in 23rd, Atwell in 25th, Ritter, 26th and Dean 29th. The race started with 40 riders.

Cool. I’d forgotten you all were dragging knees then. Incidentally, we were living in Massachusetts at that time and I had considered attending this race…I don’t remember how come I didn’t. Sorry I missed you.

1986 was Randy Renfrow’s year on his Honda RS 500. He was the last AMA Formula One Champion. Rest in Peace, good buddy.

Roger, any year Randy kept it mostly on two wheels was a good year for him. He is certainly missed.
