I just learned that Speedway racing star Kelly Moran passed away yesterday, Sunday, April 4. Kelly was a legend in Speedway and was a major part of the resurgence of Speedway racing in the early 1980s. He won the American Speedway Championship in 1983 and ’84 and was part of winning U.S. World Cup team in 1982 and 1990. Kelly was loved by the fans for his spectacular cornering style and for hanging out and partying with fans after the races. Below is a page featuring Kelly from a racing program. My condolences go out to Kelly’s family.

Kelly Moran program story from 1988.
Kelly Moran and his handsome brother Shawn entertained the crowd and gave us the kind of Speedway thrills we hungered for. He was one of a kind, world class competitor.
Kelly’s memorial service is being conducted today, April 10th in Costa Mesa, at the diminutive dirt track on which he became so famous.
Farewell Kelly Moran, or as you had stitched on the backside of your leathers,
“C ya!”

Thanks for comments about Kelly. I wished I’d gotten the chance to interview him. I got to see him race once in the bull ring at Costa Mesa back in the ’80s. He was a super-talented rider. My best wishes go out to his family.
