Zampach and Roos in Road America Supersport

Scott Zampach and Cam Roos have a good battle in the AMA 750 Supersport National at Road America in 1989. Zampach, racing on his home track, crossed the checkered flag third, just in front of Roos. Zampach and Roos were two of the very best road racers in the country during the late 1980s. Zampach burst onto the scene as a WERA novice leading most of the laps of the Honda Interceptor Cup final in 1986 over a slew of top experts. Roos was more methodical in his rise, but in 1989 Roos had a stunning season, winning three AMA 600 Supersport races as well as a tallying solid 750 Supersport finishes, including this fourth at Road America.

  1. Oh yes the Z-Man.As far as i can remember Larry Honda ran the Interceptor series for one season,1986. I ran in it up at Loudon but just missed out of the points because of a crash while running second and mech.dnfs.One of my compeditors who qualified went down and didnt race after seeing the talent there plus the race was in the wet.Canadian Johnny Ramsay who stomped us most of the season went down and crashed out while chasing the man himself,Doug Polen, who ofcourse won.:)

Right you are – it was 1986. My brain is slipping. It was a real shocker to see novice Zampach lead much of that race. I must say I’m proud I made that pick though prior to the race in publication. I remember Danny Walker telling me there was no way a novice would run anywhere near the front in that race. He obviously hadn’t seen the Z-Man race. I saw him beat Ed Key and Gary Gibson at Grattan just before the GNF that year and knew he was the real deal.
