Loudon 1984 Snapshots

In 1984 a group of friends and I rode to Road America for the AMA National. Several of the guys were supposed be taking a week off to ride up to Loudon the following week. As it turned out after a rainy and cold Elkhart all the riders bailed on the Loudon ride. I went on by myself riding a Honda FT500 Ascot across Canada, camping out along the way. I took a little pocket camera with me and with the help of a buddy from St. Louis who was a corner marshal; I got out on the track without a credential, close enough to click off some shots. Here are a few of those photos that survived all these years. I took a lot more, but these were all that turned up in a recent attic box discovery. Loudon was a crazy place in 1984. I camped out in the pits and I vividly remember my tent swaying from the concussion of dynamite the crazies on the hill set off around two in the morning. (Click on photo to see larger version)

  1. Larry…….FYI,three of my four 1984 programs show #30 as Chris Steward out of Los Angeles,he’s not listed in the Sears program of that year altho there’s a small write up with photo of him in the Sears program showing the number #40 with a solid color Arai helmet in a right hand turn showing the same knee out style as your photo has.My guess is #40 was his AFM number.

Also,in three of my four programs from 1984 they list #73 as Kevin Gardner out of Shingle Springs,Calif

There is no listing for Jessie Daniels in any of the four programs, keep in mind the program would only show pre entry riders at their best.

Thanks for that. I based #73 as Jesse Daniels off the Daytona program. Do you have the Loudon program for 1984?

Steward is a very good possibility for #30. He was a Battle of the Twins Stock class winner back in those days.

  3. Larry…..no program for 1984 Loudon, was at Loudon only once in 1978 since the only programs I have are from those I attended and since Loudon was a fair distance away I didn’t return.

I was interested in going to different AMA tracks and have been to 18 different ones over the years

Always glad to offer some input, not that I would claim an program to be the final word but it ought to be really close.

Good eye on the Bettencourt logo. I bet you’re right. In reality the 1000R was a pig, but it sure did look trick as all get out.

  5. I helped my parents, Don and LuLu Brymer, at Loudon from 1982 to 1989 when the track was sold to become New Hampshire International Speedway. The Loudon Classic was a rocking good time. We called it the Loudon Classic for 1 reason: It was in Loudon,NH not Laconia where it started.

It was a rocking good time. I lived at the race track during those years with my 2 sons, Curt and Chad. Dale Quartelly,(MA) and David Sadowski(NH)were the 2 local favorites.

In 1988 my husband, Jim Young, road racer number 87 died, from a carjacking in Tampa, Fl, where we just got a house. After being on the east coast for 8 years I moved to Coos Bay, OR. My parents were moving to Crystal Springs, FL. They came to visit me and found out that the local race track was for sale. My dad asked if I would help him…I said sure, for I thought my racing days were over. For the next 18 years he put on various races there and sold the track and now lives with his wife, my mom, LuLu in Paharump, NV. They were married when my mom was 14 and he was 16. My mom graduated Redondo Beach Union High School at age 16 and I was 2 years old at her graduation and they made me a graduation outfit to wear. I feel like I grew up with my parents…it was a very good ride!!!!

  6. Unbelievable… Camby.. I’m so sorry to hear about Jim. Jim bought my TZ250 in Largo, Florida. I thought he worked for “Barney’s Yamaha” as a salesman and rode for them. I was still somewhat involved in racing back then, but, due to bad injuries in a crash at “Loudon” coming out of turn 10, swing arm broke on TZ. AMA held my license. Thru the racing grapevine Jim heard my bike was for sale. About a month later I was at Barney’s and asked about Jim and my bike (I thought he was keeping it there). They told me, Jim had been killed in his van and didn”t give me any details… Thank You for sharing that, Jim was a nice guy and left life way to soon… Take Care..

I was a local rider, lived in Penacook and had relatives up the road near Rocky Pond.

    Raced.. AAMRR 80 to 82
    AMA 80 to 82
