Tim Powers – Grattan (1986)

Tim Powers leads Gerald Wilkins in a WERA C Superbike Novice race at Grattan Raceway in 1986. Powers was one of the top North Central region novices in WERA that season. Tim is one of those guys who seems to be a natural at everything he does. He hopped on mountain bikes and was immediately one of the top racers in Indiana. He then became a nationally known rock climber, charting a number of climbing routes on the cliffs of Eastern Kentucky.

Doing a fair amount of illicit road racing on the twisty, hilly highways of Southern Indiana with other Indianapolis-area riders in the mid-1980s, I’d heard of Tim. He was well known in those circles as a blazingly fast, if not a tad wild. Fast road riding does not always translate to fast on the track, but when Tim joined WERA he learned to go fast in the most controlled and precise setting of a road racing circuit.

This looks like turn one at Grattan, but I’m not sure. Maybe you can tell.

Some of the time I shot off-brand film (like Scotch or some drug store brand) and wow, that stuff is fading fast. Should have stuck 100 percent with Kodak or Fujifilm.

Thanks for sending those old WERA point standings. That will help me ID some riders of that era.

It was great running into you at Avon the other day. Talk to you soon.

  2. Great shot of ‘The Airman’–and a ‘tad’ wild would be an understatement. However, even being a ‘tad’ wild, he always had great control on a bike. No one could ride the wheels off a bike like Tim. And I’m not saying that just because he’s a good friend!
