Kevin Fardoux (424) got a killer start in a WERA D Superbike race at Grattan sometime in the mid-1980s. Here Fardoux, on a Yamaha RZ350, leads Lance David (122), who was riding a Yamaha TT500-based road racer. David eventually went on to win the race. Lance David was unbelievably fast on this Yamaha 500cc single-cylinder. He raced with knees into the tank, but hardly slowed down for the corners. I think he once held the track record at Grattan on this bike. I can ID at least two other riders in the photo. They are Kurt Hall (499) and Dan Clemens (474).

That’s Ken Davis on the 651 (I thought he was 654) behind Lance, and I think that’s Andy Fenwick on the RZ second to last in the shot. Ken had one of the first RZ500’s in the states, and he was kind enough to run me over with it at Indy not long after this race. I remember this race pretty well, and how unnerving the sound of Lance’s thumper was coming into the corners. You’re right,it’s as if he never slowed down! Kind of like Fritz Kling, on his Honda thumper. Oddly enough, I think Lance was faster on his thumper than his RZ at Grattan. Pretty cool seeing all of these old memories, Larry. Glad to see you’ve stayed in the sport. I hope life has been good to you and Jackie. I have to say, Jackie has aged wonderfully, so it’s at least been good to YOU!

Can’t believe you’re a GRANDPA! Steve Tayler sent me a link to the site. You’ve got a shot of him on his Rotax. It’s also cool seeing some of the students I had in my riders school from way back. Bob Sandy and Ray Yoder were a couple of good ones.

Can anyone put me in touch with Larry Lawrence for copies of these photos he has of my dad, Lance? I know Dad already has some of these types of photos from his race days, but I’d like some too. Thanks!
