Freddie Spencer leads the way at the Mid-Ohio Superbike race in 1992 riding the Two Brothers Honda RC30. Chasing Spencer is Ferracci Ducati’s Pascal Picotte (34), defending AMA Superbike Champ Thomas Stevens (1) on the Muzzy Kawasaki, Doug Polen (23), on a break from the World Superbike Championship on another Ferracci Ducati and Camel Honda’s Tom Kipp (16), racing on his home track. Polen moved up to win the race. Unfortunately this race was greatly overshadowed by the crash of Vance & Hines Yamaha’s Larry Schwarzbach. Schwarzbach died three days later in a Cleveland hospital.

Why was Russell wearing the #1 plate? Didn’t Thomas Stevens win the title in ’91?

Good catch. That is actually Thomas Stevens, not Russell on the No. 1 bike. I made the change. Thanks

Larry Swarzbach was a great guy, and a fellow CRRC/CMRA guy. Friendly and fast with a future in the sport — he won his first career AMA 600 race earlier in the day.

For sure Larry was headed for big things. Gone way too soon.
