The Roland Sands KTM

The Roland Sands 450 Super Single motorcycle was at the dealer show in Indianapolis. Initially there was excitement about the possibility of converting 450F motocross machines into little GP style road-racing machines and creating a national Super Singles class. The critics then weighed in claiming the 450F concept would be too costly and the engines, designed for short bursts of power, would not hold up under much more constant full throttle applications required in road racing. Right now the Super Singles concept seems to be on hold. My guess is that unless the manufacturers specifically design a 450F-based sport bike for sale, the concept, while very cool, will never catch on.

  1. I didnt think the 450’s would stand up to the torture of Springfield and other long, fast Dirt tracks. And, I was wrong. Is this a good comparison?

  2. Ed,

I don’t claim to be an expert on how well 450 singles would hold up in road racing. I was simply stating the arguments brought forth against the machines. I think it’s a great concept. I leave it to the experts to decide what the viability of the motorcycle would be in those conditions. You bring up a good point though that 450s do run miles and seem to hold up pretty well.

    Thanks for commenting.

  3. I am still hoping that the SuperSingles class still makes it’s way to the AMA. It will be an incredible feeder class for road racing and for showcasing young talent. Flat Track has proved this formula does work with their Pro Singles Class with up and coming riders like JD Beach, James Rispoli, and Brad Baker. However there are certain tracks that this series should not even consider racing at; Daytona comes to mind. Seeing these bikes race around Barber Motorsports Park, Laguna Seca, and Mid Ohio should put on an excellent show.
