Freddie Spencer on the cover of Cycle News after sweeping all three premier classes at Daytona in March of 1985.
Bike Week ’85 was very good for Freddie Spencer. Spencer swept all three feature classes at Daytona that year, winning the Daytona 200, the Daytona Formula One and Daytona International Lightweight races.
It was the first year the 200 ran under Superbike rules.
To this day Spencer’s 1985 performance was the best of all time at Daytona. Oh yeah, he went on later that summer to win both the 500cc and 250cc Grand Prix World Championships. Simply amazing.
Here’s the Cycle News cover of the Daytona coverage trumpeting Spencer’s accomplishment. Henny Ray Abrams took the photos featured on the cover that year.
Off subject, but I just noticed Cycle News was a buck an issue to buy on the newsstand back then. It’s $3.95 now. Ouch.
Thanks for the memories, Larry!
The AMA Superbike series was on a role then…look where it is today.

Superbike had a great 25-plus year run. Looks like the DMG wants to make Daytona Sportbike th new main class. Makes you wonder if Superbike’s days are numbered.
