Shoot Out in Elvis Country

Memphis Motorsports Park wasn’t much of a road race track. It was a long drag strip straight that made a loop and had a few esses on the return as it looped back to the drag strip. The one thing that the uncomplicated road course did do was keep racing fields bunched up because of the draft effect on the long front straight.

This photo is from late in the AMA 250 Grand Prix race at the track in 1987. Renfrow would hold on to win this race over Kocinski and Carter. Kocinski won the 1987 AMA 250 Grand Prix Championship that season before going on to eventually become FIM 250cc Grand Prix World Champion and World Superbike Champion.
