Mid-Ohio 250GP Start (1987)

Randy Renfrow (4) leads the start of the 1987 AMA 250 Grand Prix race at Mid-Ohio. Also in the photo is Donny Greene (1), Andy Leisner (6), David Curtis (47), Greg Esser (26) and possibly Danny Coe Alan Inglis (311) running wide through the first turn.

Yeah, that’s me– #6.  I crashed in that race while running well, but I was able to remount and finish to salvage some points.

Andy Leisner, who I contacted to help me ID the riders in the photo wrote back:

That was typical Randy Renfrow style– chin on the tank whether it was a corner or a straight… I believe that’s Danny Coe on the Phil Schilling-tuned Rotax running wide.  Phil, the Editor of Cycle Magazine at the time, used to use that Buell-esque, bulbous aero fairing.”

  1. Nope, not me. My AMA number was 7. But you are correct in that I rode a Phil Schilling prepared Spondon Rotax in ’87 and ’88, may have also run wide on a few occasions too, however not in this pic.

    RIP Randy
