Motorcycle Racing at the Rock

One of the craziest races I ever covered was WERA Sprint and National Endurance races at Rockingham. Rockingham’s road course utilized both banked NASCAR  turns and a tight little infield section. Riders of smaller bikes, like the Honda 500 Interceptor, could hold the throttle wide open through the baning. Bigger bikes, like this Suzuki GSXR750 ridden by Mark McQuade, had to roll off a bit going into the turn.

It took some major cojones to race a motorcycle at the Rock. It scared the bejeezus out of me just watching the riders hit the tight, steep Rockingham banking. Fortunatley smarter heads prevailed and I don’t believe the track is used for motorcycle racing any longer.
