Donnie Hansen Nails St. Pete Pro Motocross National Start (1982)

My old friend and colleague Tom Mueller stopped in Indy on his way to summer vacation and dropped off several boxes of his early 1980s AMA Motocross and Supercross slides and film. Perfect timing here at Rider Files since we just finished up scanning several other photo collections and were in need of new images to preserve and share. One of the first slides I scanned was this classic, one of the moto starts from the AMA 250cc Motocross National at Sunshine Speedway in St. Petersburg, Florida. It looks like the Honda CR250R motocross machines had the horsepower that season with almost all red bikes in the front here including Donnie Hansen (7) leading the way over David Bailey (23), Kenny Keylon (41), Steve Martin (29) and possibly Doug Longwell (117). Among the top non-Honda starters in this shot are Yamaha’s Broc Glover (6) and Mark Murphy (52), along with Suzuki’s Warren Reid (16) and Kawasaki’s Billy Liles (119). Keylon won the overall that day over Bailey and Glover. Can’t wait to share more of Muller’s images in the coming weeks. (Tom Mueller photo)
