Battle for the AMA Road Race Title with Dale Singleton and Mike Spencer (1981)

Dale Singleton (30) and Mike Spencer (73) battle over second in the AMA Formula One National at Pocono in August of 1981. Freddie Spencer was out front, but this was the race for the ’81 AMA Road Racing title. Singleton and Mike Spencer were tied in points coming into the season road race finale and whoever won this battle would be crowned champion. Mike Spencer won the pole on his factory Honda RS1000, but was dealing with a brake issue in the final. He was intentionally keeping pace with Singleton and planned to try to make his move on the final lap. But it never happened. Spencer hit a bump going into a turn, lost the front end and went down. That allowed Singleton to cruise home to a safe second earning him the national title. (Rich Chenet photo)
