Rod Crosby and Fred Merkel Race at Pocono (1981)

Rod Crosby (21) and Fred Merkel (83) had a great battle in the AMA Novice Road Race National at Pocono in August of 1981. Alabama’s Crosby led Californian Merkel for most of the race, but in the closing laps Crosby got on the brakes too hard and ran off the track. That freed Merkel to cruise home to victory.
