Kenny Roberts, like everyone else, was eager to get a close-up look at Honda’s new GP weapon for World Champion Freddie Spencer for 1984. The NSR500 was indeed a potent racing machine. In spite of an injury-plagued season, Fast Freddie still won a series-leading five GPs in ’84 (three of them on this bike, and the other two on the NS500, three-cyclinder). Here at Daytona the NSR500 was making its racing debut and Roberts was getting a good look. Of course King Kenny had nothing to fear. His factory Yamaha OW69 “Daytona Special” was indeed special and undoubtedly top-dog on the high banks and Roberts would score victory that day.
