Steve Freeman takes the checkered for winning the Trophy race at the Columbus Half-Mile (Charity Newsies) in June of 1976. Freeman pulled way late in the race from a battle with Mike Eades. Afterward Steve said on the win that he hoped “One of these days that checkered flag will be the National.” (Gary Van Voorhi photo)
