Modesto’s June Jewett Wheelies at Hillclimb (circa 1966)

June Jewett, a native of Utah, was a true motorcycle enthusiast whose skill on two wheels defined his legacy in the Central Valley. Beyond his success as a racer in scrambles and enduro events, June was an exceptional competitor in Hillclimb, a passion captured here as he conquers a steep grade. His racing expertise served as the foundation for Jewett Motors, which he opened in Modesto in 1959 alongside his wife, Marie. Driven by a dream to operate a Harley franchise, June even sold his personal Harley-Davidson to seed his initial inventory. While the business began with BSA motorcycles in an empty gas station, it eventually evolved into a thriving dealership representing Yamaha, BMW, and Ducati. Known as a pioneer of the local racing scene, June’s competitive spirit remained the heart of the family business until its sale in 1976.
