Scott Gray Overcomes Obstacles to Score Strong Daytona 200 Finish (1988)

Scott Gray racing the Yoshimura Suzuki in the 1988 Daytona 200. I don’t remember the reason, but Gray and teammate Doug Polen ran ’87 Suzuki GSX-R750s instead of the ’88 models. Gray overcame a lot of issues to finish a solid fourth in the 200. During the week he crashed and injured his ankles badly enough that it was amazing he even raced. He was actually running in a podium spot (3rd) late in the race, but Bubba Shobert passed him on the factory Honda and Gray wasn’t able to respond because his Suzuki went down to three cylinders eight laps from the end and wouldn’t rev past 8000 rpm. “Another five laps and I wouldn’t have finished,” Gray said afterwards.
