Danny Chandler in the ABC Superbikers at Carlsbad (1984)

Danny Chandler at ABC Superbikers VI in October of 1984. “Magoo” who won the made-for-TV event in 1982 was expected to be one of the main contenders in the ’84 edition, even though factory Honda did not supply him a bike for the race. Instead Chandler was racing on a Pro Circuit-built Honda CR500. The bike proved plenty fast, the equal of the factory bikes, in fact Chandler was making a move on factory Yamaha YZ490-mounted Broc Glover to take the lead in the motocrossers Heat race, when he grabbed a little too much throttle and went down. That meant Chandler had to go through the Semi (essentially a last-chance qualifier for the remaining three spots on the grid) where he finished a half-bike length behind winner Kent Howerton to secure his place in the final. In the main event Chandler ran up front early, but ended up finishing fourth, behind Howerton, Rick Johnson and Broc Glover. — 📷 @mitcho399
