An Indoor Hillclimb in Anchorage (1985)

Now for something completely different. How about an indoor hillclimb competition? In Anchorage, Alaska’s Sullivan Arena they had something called “Showdown ’85”. The event organizers advertised an “Unclimbable Hill,” named appropriately enough, “The Widowmaker.” The “hill” was built of a plywood ramp constructed with scaffolding at a 45-degree angle and went from arena floor to just 10-feet short of the ceiling! Apparently every kind of motorcycle took a shot at the hill, including flat track, motocross, hillclimbers and even speedway bikes. The only two riders to make the hill from a standing start were on hillclimb bikes. They even performed a side-by-side drag race on the narrow ramp. This photo shows Brad Bomhoff attempting the climb on his Honda CR500. The event also featured flat track and speedway races. Sounds like a fun time was had by all. (H.R. Edge photo)
