Warren Reid sporting a Wrangler hat, which puts this photo around 1983 or ’84. David Bailey credits Warren with inventing the technique of skimming the tops of whoops, which he first tried successfully at the Pittsburgh Supercross in 1983, beating Bailey in a heat race. Reid discovered he could ride the top of the whoops while practicing at Indian Dunes. At Pittsburgh Warren recalls he just said, “Screw it!” and pinned it all the way across the whoops and made it lap after lap. Other riders took notice of course, and it didn’t take long for Reid’s style to take over from the old way of jumping in and out of the whoops two or three at a time.
