I came across this photo and thought that I hadn’t seen many photos of Fred Merkel on a Honda RS500. So I did a Google Image search and found zero results of Fred on Honda’s three-cylinder customer GP bike. So this is a fairly rare photo of Flyin’ Fred on the production version of Honda’s unobtainable and super-trick three-cylinder NS500 Grand Prix machine. Fred only raced it a few times in ’83 and naturally, Fred being Fred, he landed on the podium every time, in spite of being a rookie in the premier AMA Formula One class.
