Spud Walters on the Line for a 4-Stroke National (2000)

Spud Walters on the gate ready to race a 4-Stroke National in 2000. Walters was a multi-time champion in the series despite being in his 30s at the time. Spud was a leading amateur rider, but instead of chasing the nationals when he turned pro, he stayed closer to home in Northern California and chased contingency money races. He made a living out of it and hit the nationals when the opportunity presented itself. He scored a top-10 in the premier 250cc class at the Glen Helen National in 2001. He later went on to be a test rider for Honda and helped develop that company’s motocross bikes in the mid-to-late 2000s.
